BASL island-wide court boycott over 'culture of killings'

Democracy, Rights, Labour & Judicial Independence2026Very high media attention

What happened

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka called an island-wide withdrawal from court work after the Akuregoda double murder and urged the government to curb what it described as a culture of killings.

Accountability assessment

What this record does and does not attribute to the government (see methodology). Where an underlying problem predates this government, only its handling is attributed.

A major institutional signal of collapsing confidence in public safety. The boycott itself is not proof that government policy caused the murders.

Evidence label: Controversy (The incident is real, but responsibility, motive, propriety or causal attribution remains contested.). Record as of edition 2026-08-24.
